Overview
As a Captive Insurance Underwriter, you will play a critical role in evaluating and pricing risk for new and existing captive insurance programs. Working closely with actuarial, legal, client management, and technology teams, you will help ensure that captive structures are designed to meet both client objectives and sound underwriting principles.
Key Responsibilities
What You Will Do:
Underwriting & Risk Assessment
Analyse and underwrite insurance submissions for potential captive participation, including evaluating risk profiles, historical loss data, exposure information, and policy structures.
Apply actuarial assumptions, rating models, and underwriting guidelines to develop customised pricing and program design.
Develop and document underwriting rationale, including retention layers, policy terms, and reinsurance strategies.
Evaluate multi-line and multi-year program structures, layered programs, and alternative risk transfer mechanisms.
Captive Program Structuring
Collaborate with feasibility analysts and actuaries to assess viability of captive structures and support program design recommendations.
Provide input on policy wording, limits, attachment points, and exclusions in line with the captive’s risk appetite and regulatory constraints.
Assist in developing coverage terms for bespoke or emerging risks, particularly in technology, cyber, or intangible risk classes.
Portfolio Monitoring & Optimisation
Conduct periodic reviews of captive programs, assessing underwriting performance, claims development, and pricing adequacy.
Monitor trends and emerging risks, updating underwriting guidelines and rate assumptions as appropriate.
Support the review of actuarial loss projections and help ensure adequate reserving and capital allocation.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with client relationship managers and business development teams to understand client goals and craft appropriate coverage solutions.
Communicate underwriting findings and recommendations clearly to internal stakeholders and clients, including via client reports or pitch decks.
Coordinate with legal and compliance to ensure coverage terms and program designs adhere to relevant domicile regulations and internal standards.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Required Skills & Qualifications:
3–7 years of commercial lines underwriting experience, ideally with exposure to captive insurance, alternative risk transfer, or specialty lines.
Strong knowledge of insurance underwriting principles, rating methodologies, and actuarial fundamentals.
Analytical mindset with proficiency in Excel, risk modelling tools, and insurance data analysis.
Familiarity with captive insurance structures, reinsurance, and risk retention strategies (prior experience in a captive manager or broker role is a plus).
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, Actuarial Science, or related field (CPCU, ARe, ARM, or ACII designations preferred).
